Bike Comfort & Fit
|
Every model comes in about 5 different sizes and only one
will fit you well. People come in all sizes and need the expert fit bike
shops provide. They ensure that your bike is the right size and adjusted
properly just for you. Test rides before you buy and follow-up fitting &
fine-tuning are available, too. Comfort, safety & performance all depend
a good fit. |
Mass-merchant bicycles come in few sizes forcing you to compromise
on the fit. Most don't have experienced staff to help you determine the right
size bike or how to adjust it to fit you. They don’t offer test rides and
don’t do follow-up adjustments. The result is likely to be an uncomfortable,
cumbersome & inefficient ride. |
Selection
|
Bike shops have a wide selection of bicycle models, sizes
& styles-all suited for different purposes. Their expert staff have
the know how to help coach you through the process of finding the best bike
for you.
|
Selection is usually very limited and staff expertise is
generally limited to whoever's on duty in the Toy Department at the time.
|
Safety &
Performance
|
A bicycle, as delivered from the factory, needs careful
and competent assembly and set up of over 65 critical items that are crucial
to making it be safe, reliable and to perform as intended. Bike shop
bikes are assembled in-store by experienced mechanics and each one is test
ridden to ensure proper function and safety. They are then carefully selected
and adjusted to fit your individual needs at the time of purchase. Test
rides are encouraged, maintenence and operation of the bike is explained
and post sale servicing is readily available. |
Most Big Mart bikes are assembled by a person who assembles
lawn chairs, grills & bookshelves and they're allowed about 20 minutes
to get it on the shelf. Even if they're lucky enough to have someone who
knows how do do it right, they don't have the time. It takes an experienced,
competent bike tech about an hour and a half to properly prepare a
new bike. Many of these bikes end up in our shop to be re-assembled and adjusted
after just one trip to the end of the driveway. |
Value After The Sale
|
Bicycle shops have an experienced staff who welcome post-sale
service, adjustments & support, usually for free. They're glad to give
competent advice and want to provide whatever you need to fully enjoy
cycling.

Accessories
|
Bike shops offer a wide selection of quality cycling accessories,
helmets and clothing in many models, colors and sizes. The staff consults
with you to find the right accessories and gear for your bike and how and
where you ride.
|
Usually a limited selection of accessories made to be the
cheapest you can get with little or no help to choose the right ones to
get the job done. |
Warranty
|
Bicycles sold at bike shops come with full warranties. And,
most problems are resolved in-house. Plus, shops stand behind their bikes
and products with experienced mechanics who are riders.
|
Products sold here have manufacturer warranties only, making
it impossible or cumbersome to get a repair or adjustment. They'll usually
let you exchange a defective bike for another one or give you a refund.
